Some species of ants (Fire ants and Electric ants) can inflict a very painful sting and are a Category 1 restricted pest under the Biosecurity Act 2014. If you suspect that either of these Ant species is present on your property you should contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.Ants enter homes in search of food, particularly sweet and sticky substances.
Some ants can give painful stings, while the garden ant has swarming characteristics and can contaminate food. Unlike bees, ants can sting multiple times.
Ants are not considered a health risk to humans but they are a nuisance
Management
Ants come inside your home looking for food. They are attracted by sweet and sticky substances. Here’s how you could ant-proof your home:
- Store food in re-sealable containers
- Clean up food and liquid spills immediately
- Remove food scraps from under kitchen appliances
- If you have a pet clear up your pet’s left overs straight away
- Make sure all garbage cans are tightly sealed
- Keep compost piles enclosed and covered
- Prevent ant entry to your home - seal cracks and crevices in door and window frames
