Cockroaches are cold-blooded insects that thrive in warm, humid conditions. This is why buildings in Queensland are particularly prone to infestations.
Cockroaches eat a wide range of food, including rotting garbage, and it is believed that they spread a number of diseases to humans including salmonella and gastroenteritis. There is now some evidence that they can also cause allergies.
Cockroach Description
- oval-shaped body
- six legs
- long antennae
- flat and low-lying body
- fast-moving
- winged
Problems
Cockroaches prefer to live in kitchens and other food preparation areas where they can feed off food spills and have access to water. Hiding spots for the household cockroach include:
- confined spaces - behind the refrigerator; in a pantry; underneath a stack of newspapers; in cardboard boxes
- kitchen cupboards
- under sinks
- cracks in walls
- near water heaters
- in drains and gardens
Management
To reduce the risk of Cockroach infestation pay attention to the following suggestions.
Indoors
Thoroughly clean the house at regular intervals. Pay special attention to the kitchen and other food preparation areas and clean underneath the fridge, stove, toaster and other movable appliances. Empty the kitchen rubbish bin regularly. Clean up any food spills promptly and do not leave out pet food or food scraps in pet bowls. Store food in sealed containers, not in the original cardboard boxes. Make sure there are no sources of water such as a dripping tap, as cockroaches need a steady water supply to survive. Repair any holes, cracks or gaps in the walls, skirting boards and inside cupboards.
Outdoors
Don't stack newspapers, magazines or cardboard boxes anywhere in the house. Keep compost bins screened and away from the house. Use appropriate insecticide and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Cockroach baits contain poison that a cockroach carries back to the nest, which may help kill the rest of the nest.
Envirosafe Treatment
A qualified and licensed Envirosafe pest control operator can determine the type, source and extent of a cockroach infestation and will use registered and environmently safe insecticides to control the cockroaches.
Indoor Treatment |
| Spray | Synthetic Pyrethroid Insecticide |
| Dust | Synthetic Pyrethroid Insecticide |
| Gel bait | Only required in extreme cases |
Outdoor Treatment |
| Spray | Synthetic Pyrethroid Insecticide |
Pyrethroids are a group of man-made environment friendly pesticides similar to the natural pesticide pyrethrum, which is produced by chrysanthemum flowers. There are many different Pyrethroids and your Envirosafe operator will use the correct Cockroach specific pesticide.
After this treatment, continued good hygiene practices as outlined above should reduce the risk of further infestations.
